  • Choose your terrain carefully! Pick a quiet area and make sure that the slope is very short and very gentle.

Side stepping

Except for taking off your skis and walking (which doesn't count,) sidestepping is the most elegant, stable, and easy method for climbing uphill. Unfortunately it's the slowest, but on steeper hills it's the only way to go.

Position your skis across the hill so you don't slide down. To climb up the hill you simply "walk" sideways up the hill using small steps.

Do this side step down the hill too, (for practice as it may come in handy.)

  • Keep your skis across the hill--point it up or down and you'll slide away.
  • Make tiny steps to begin.
