- Practice Hockey stops before you try this exercise.
This exercise is done with a quick pivoting action of the
feet and legs--skis held on the snow throughout.
Begin a straight run down the flow line with the skis hip
width apart, all your joints flexed comfortably and your weight evenly
distributed between your skis and along the arches of your feet. Maintain light
contact with the front of your boots.
Stand tall and then rapidly retract your legs--as they
become light, quickly pivot both feet to one direction.
- Keep the upper body facing straight down the hill!
This action will bring the skis into a sideways slip down
the flow line.
- The upper body should continue in the same
direction--down the flow line.
Slip for a moment like this, then extend and pivot your
skis back to point them straight down the flow line.
Straight run for a moment, then pivot the skis in the
other direction, keeping the upper body facing down the flow line.
Try this a number of times with a straight run between
side slips.
Finally, take the straight run out of the sequence. Pivot
the skis continuously from one direction to the other, while slipping down the
flow line.
- As you become more comfortable, try pivoting from side to
side without using much retraction.
Tips:
- Keep your eyes and upper body focused on a target down
the flow line.
- Stay loose and flexed with light contact between your
shins and the tongues of your boots--stay in the Sweet spot.
- Work both skis equally in the pivot.
